Making a big difference in the lives we serve.
Palliative Care of Santa Fe (PCS) is a 501(c)(3) community-based volunteer organization. The mission is to provide symptom management and multidisciplinary care for individuals dealing with a life-threatening illness such as lung disease, cancer, HIV, heart failure, kidney and liver failure. The service is accomplished with a dedicated team of professional staff and trained volunteers. PCS provides a palliative care approach that can include medical and/or alternative treatments or no treatment at all. The focus is alleviation of suffering and enhancement of quality of life. This type of care informs the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of the patient and thoughtfully listens for what is needed in the moment. PCS serves not only patients but also their family by offering respite support and educational help in caring for their loved one. PCS provides an at-home palliative care model, distinct from the biomedical model that is becoming an integral part of hospitals and the medical field.
Patients receiving palliative care are less symptomatic, and the severity of pain is often lower, which appears to be related to a sense of well-being people experience in their homes. Statistics indicate less anxiety and lower depression scores among patients under palliative care. They report feeling more control over the course and symptoms of their illness.
